New Family, Friends and Kin service to support carers across South West Queensland

Stride, in partnership with Western Queensland PHN is proud to offer a free, confidential peer support service for family, friends and loved ones supporting someone experiencing suicidal distress or recovering from a suicide attempt.

Families, friends and loved ones supporting someone through suicidal distress or following a suicide attempt will soon have access to dedicated peer support through Stride Mental Health’s new Family, Friends and Kin Service.

Funded by Western Queensland Primary Health Network, the free and confidential service will launch in August 2026, providing support to people aged 18 and over across Roma, St George and surrounding communities.

Support will be available face-to-face in Roma and St George, as well as by phone and telehealth for people living across the Paroo, Murweh, Bulloo and Quilpie Shire regions.

Support for carers, family and loved ones

When someone is experiencing a suicidal crisis, family members, friends and loved ones often play an important role in supporting them. But caring for someone through a difficult time can also be overwhelming, and it’s important that carers have support for their own wellbeing.

The Family, Friends and Kin Service provides non-clinical, personalised support from Peer Carer Support Workers with their own lived experience of supporting someone through suicidal distress.

Support can include:

  • One-on-one peer support
  • Flexible outreach in the home or community
  • Advocacy and service navigation
  • Practical information and guidance
  • Connections to health and community services
  • Support by phone or online

The service is designed around each person’s needs, making it easier to access support in a way that works for them.

“Supporting someone through a suicidal crisis can feel overwhelming, and many people put their own wellbeing aside while caring for someone else,” said Stride CEO Luke Lindsay.

“The Family, Friends and Kin Service ensures carers don’t have to face that journey alone. Our Peer Carer Support Workers draw on their own lived experience to provide compassionate support, practical guidance and connection to services that can make a real difference.”

Western Queensland Primary Health Network CEO Sandy Gillies said the service recognises the important role carers play in supporting their loved ones.

You don’t have to do it alone

The Family, Friends and Kin Service complements the existing Universal Aftercare Service, strengthening support for people experiencing suicidal distress while also supporting the people walking alongside them.

The service is free, confidential and available through self-referral, as well as referrals from health and community services.
