Step Up Step Down offers a short term residential environment that is welcoming, calm, safe and youth friendly for young people age 16 to 21 years who are experiencing psychological distress and/or mental health concerns. At Step Up (before a hospital admission) Step Down (after a hospital admission), young people have the opportunity to participate in structured programs, individual activities and clinical and recovery focused interventions. These may include facilitated referral to youth specific services that are relevant to the young person’s goals, hopes and ambitions. It is important that the young person themselves wants to participate and agrees to enter the service.

The Cairns Youth Step Up Step Down (YSUSD) Manoora program is for young people aged 16 – 21 who have recently experienced, or are at increased risk of experiencing, an acute episode of mental unwellness or further deterioration.
The YSUSD program provides a residential environment that is welcoming, calm, safe and youth-friendly. During the day, young people have the opportunity to participate in structured programs, including group programs and individual clinical and recovery-focused interventions.

Our program is centered on a recovery model, offering individualised support that encourages independence and skill-building for those recovering from mental health challenges.
Once a referral is submitted, the team will review it to determine if the program is the most appropriate service for the individual’s needs.
If accepted, the person will be contacted to begin the intake process and schedule a time to enter the program. If the referral is not accepted, the person will be directed to other appropriate services.
