World Suicide Prevention Day – Changing the Narrative

Every year on 10 September, people and communities across Australia and around the world come together to mark World Suicide Prevention Day. It’s a chance to pause, reflect, and stand united in our shared commitment to preventing suicide and spreading hope.

This year’s theme, “Changing the Narrative on Suicide”, reminds us that the way we talk about suicide matters. By shifting from silence and stigma to openness, empathy, and action, we can help ensure that those who are struggling feel heard and have more opportunities to find the support that’s right for them.

In Australia, suicide remains the leading cause of death among people aged 15–44. More than 3,000 Australians die by suicide each year, and over 55,000 make an attempt. These are not just numbers, they are loved ones, colleagues and friends. Behind every statistic is a story that deserves to be seen and valued.

At Stride, we’re committed to changing this story. Our suicide prevention services provide immediate, compassionate support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as care for families, friends, and carers after a suicide attempt.

On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s remember: every conversation counts, and every act of connection can make a difference. Together, we can help build a future where fewer lives are lost to suicide, and more Australians find hope on their mental health journey.
